Today begins the first edition of Cook Your Book. This month we have special guest contributor Christina Mosing. I am so excited for this new monthly series and to have some guest writers on the blog. See below how Christina cooked this month’s book club book: The Woman in Cabin 10!

Our first edition of Cook Your Book! We are currently reading the tenth book of our book club (yay us for sticking with it!) and have been rotating houses for our monthly meetings! The idea to create Cook Your Book came to me when one of our book club members decided to go above and beyond and host an on-themed dinner. She raised the bar and anyone who knows me knows I love some friendly competition! I was set to host our next book, The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware, and that I did!

With Halloween right around the corner, we wanted a suspenseful book and after a bit of consideration, The Woman in Cabin 10 was the one! The book takes place on an exclusive Scandinavian cruise liner in which the main character, Lo Blacklock, witnesses a woman being thrown overboard. Lo spends her time on the ship trying to prove what she knows the be true: the woman in cabin 10 was murdered. Our group gave it 4 stars (out of 5) and overall, we loved it!

Now that we have the book, how do we cook it? Scandinavian ingredients aren’t the easiest to find in a Louisiana grocery store; so, it was time to get creative. I thought about one thing a cruise always has and then it hit me, a captains dinner! Instantly, I knew the fine-china gifted for our wedding would get its debut after 5 years of marriage! The table was set and once the book club members arrived, we dined as if we were sailing the North Sea, just like Lo!

On the menu were fall-inspired dishes including savory charcuterie board, spinach and feta salad, broiled chicken thighs served over a vegetable and quinoa medley and for dessert, a peach cobbler, complements of Mr. Bryn Mosing! Although I was challenged with the idea of preparing Finnish canapés and gravlax, I let the season dictate our meal and it turned out to be a great night.

Our book club has had so much fun getting together not only to discuss the books we read but now to show off our creative hosting skills and bring the books to life! Stay tuned for our next post!

Savory Charcuterie Board

There is no way to go wrong with a charcuterie board. Anything you love, put it on a platter and I promise, your guest will love it too! For this particular board, I did a variety of cheeses that include a goat cheese log, rolled in chopped walnuts and topped it with a drizzle of honey, a strawberry champagne block and pepperoni and mozzarella paninos! Add some fruits (I went with the darkest grapes I could find and some sweet apples) and a variety of crackers and call it a day! Don’t forget the pumpkin kettle corn if you host during October!

Spinach and Feta Salad

I found this delicious recipe here and made it my own with a few minor changes including my trusted vinaigrette!

1/4 cup olive oil

1/4 cup red wine vinegar 2 TBS dijon mustard

1.5 TBS honey

Salt and pepper to taste

Broiled Chicken Thighs

Single sheet pan meals are my favorite! The least amount of dishes, the better. For this, I grabbed my favorite fall vegetables (I went with a sweet potato, butternut squash, Fiji apples, brussel sprouts, shallots and bacon, that’s a vegetable - right?) Quartered them, tossed them with olive oil and then seasoned lightly with salt, pepper, garlic and some fresh seasonal herbs including rosemary, thyme and sage. I placed the bone-in, skin on chicken thighs on top of the veggies and baked at 350* for 35 minutes and broiled on low for an additional 10 minutes to get that delicious crispy skin.

Peach Cobbler

Bryn helped me out by baking the peach cobbler for us and it was DELICIOUS. He followed this recipe and we served it with Bluebell Vanilla Bean ice cream!
